Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics

Welcome to the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics.

Our Department offers an ACS-certified B.S. in Chemistry degree, in addition to the M.S. in Chemistry. We also offer several concentrations at the undergraduate and graduate levels in addition to minor options at the undergraduate level.

As a student in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Physics, you'll work in well-equipped, state-of-the-art labs and facilities with modern instruments including 300 MHz NMR, liquid chromatography, GC-MS, high resolution FTIR, and Raman equipment.

The B.S. in Chemistry program is the primary degree for entry into the chemical and pharmaceutical industries and also for continuing on to graduate programs in chemistry, biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, bio-medical engineering, and many other areas. Our degree program is also suitable for students who may want to apply to professional schools in medicine, pharmacy, and veterinary medicine. Pre-med students usually take the MCAT exam in their junior years after completing organic chemistry.

The M.S. programs are designed for working chemists in local industries who want to extend their knowledge in modern chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry.

My name is Dr. Dougherty, and I'm the Chair of the Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics. I want to congratulate you on your acceptance to the university and welcome you to our department. Prior to joining FDU, I worked as a research scientists for a number of years. And while I really enjoyed that, I found that I missed academia. And I wanted to come back, although this time at the other end of the desk. It was a good decision. The Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Physics is part of FDU's Becton College of Arts and Sciences. Our goal is to cultivate a well-rounded student who's equipped with the technical skills and scientific knowledge necessary to succeed and in your personal, professional, and academic goals. We are one department, two campuses, joined by that common goal. Our department offers ACS certified Bachelor's degrees in both chemistry and biochemistry. Students wanting a more flexible program can also earn a Bachelor of Science in Science. We offer small class sizes, hands-on experimentation, and modern instrumentation for both research and teaching. Our faculty are very accessible, and offers students the opportunity to do undergraduate research in a wide area of research interests. Those students are then encouraged to present their findings both internally and externally at research symposia. Students can also apply to a number of combined programs, where you can earn your Bachelor of Science in either chemistry or biochemistry, and then move directly into a graduate program to earn a Form D, MS in Chemistry, MS in Cosmetic Science, or Master of Arts in Teaching. You can learn more about our faculty, staff, and programs by visiting our website. All program information is there along with the frequently asked questions. If you need further information, please reach out to either the admissions office or directly to the department and we're there to help you.
